The AO Foundation is a medically guided, non profit organisation with international research, development and teaching activities in the field of Trauma, Spine and Craniomaxillofacial as well as Veterinary surgery. Its goals are to enhance and support medical advances in the surgical treatment of fractures and diseases of the musculo-skeletal system to the benefit of the patients. Founded in 1958, the AO today constitutes one of the largest and most important medical networks worldwide with an international faculty of over 3’000 actively teaching surgeons in over 100 countries that have educated close to 500’000 surgeons and operating room personnel in operative fracture management.

The SLF is intensively involved in the research of snow and avalanches and provides daily reports on the dangers and risks of avalanches. Other alpine natural hazards such as landslides, flooding etc. as well as interactions between nature and environment are equally studied.
The research is focused on a comprehensive risk management, the formation and dynamics of avalanches and the effects of permafrost etc. Furthermore courses for avalanche experts are offered as well as expertise and consulting in this field.

The SFI Foundation includes the Swiss Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF) as well as the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorim Davos / World Radiation Centre (PMOD/WRC).

The SIAF in Davos is focused on the research of the immunological background of allergic diseases and asthma in close collaboration with the local clinics and the University of Zurich.

PMOD/WRC: Physikalisch-Meteorolgisches Observatorium Davos and World Radiation Centre
The world radiation observatory is studying the composition of solar irradiance and its effects and interactions on the natural balances in the earth’s atmosphere. Special services are the World Optical depth Research and Calibration Centre (WORCC) and the contributions to the World Weather Watch program (WWW). The institute works in close collaboration with the ETH in Zurich and the NASA for space experiments.

A federal legislation of 1980 constitutes the basis of the Swiss National Park. It defines and regulates the mission, goals and tasks of the SNP. The Swiss National Park is a reserve in which nature is completely protected from human intervention and influence. All animals and the entire vegetation are preserved for a natural evolution. A further goal is to scientifically study these natural developments and to provide information about these evolutions to a broader community.

GRF Davos aims at providing scientific and technical know how and solutions for the identification, analysis, assessment and management of the whole variety of risks due to natural hazards, technical or biological risks, pandemics, terrorism, work safety, global change, etc. GRF Davos is based on three pillars: the Risk Academy, the IDRC Conferences and Workshops and a web-based Platform for Networks. GRF Davos promotes the “integral risk and safety management” approach and facilitates the closing of gaps between science, policy and application by involving a wide group of risk management experts, practitioners, scientists and key players from all different sectors (further information on www.grforum.org).

The goals and mission of the Foundation for Gastroenterological Surgery are to promote surgical skills to postgraduate surgeons through courses of one week duration with formal lectures, discussion groups and most importantly hands- on practical workshops for suturing techniques and laparoscopic surgery. Presently a research project studies, if a training of young surgeons with virtual reality simulators is of any benefit for the patients.
Without the cooperation and support of industry, offering the technical logistics, these courses could not be organized
The Foundation for Gastroenterological Surgery was created in 1989 after the first hands-on course was initiated in 1984 by a small group of surgeons. Since then more than 5000 young surgeons have been trained and educated. The board of the foundation consists exclusively of University accredited surgeons from all over Europe who, just as the rest of the faculty are working on a honorary basis.

The department of surgery acts as a centre of competence for the entire canton and offers every surgical specialty with the exception of heart- and transplantation surgery. In trauma surgery there are close links in clinical front-line research with the AO. Its representatives are part of the international AO faculty and the level one trauma centre is an official and well respected host for AO fellows from around the world. Clinical studies are also performed by the divisions of vascular, thoracic and visceral surgery while teaching programs occur in conjunction with different universities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

The department of internal medicine is the reference centre for the canton for the entire spectrum of medicine including angiology, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, infectious diseases, nephrology/dialysis, oncology and pneumology. In teaching and research which focuses on blood-flow and hemo-coagulation as well as high altitude medicine there are close links to the University of Berne.

The department of GYO is the reference centre for the entire canton. Its services include since 2003 the centre of competence for breast surgery and together with the paediatric clinic it is responsible for care of the neonates.

The Department of Neurology and Neurorehabilitation at the rehabilitation centre Valens is specialised in the care of patients with diseases or trauma of the nervous system (eg. stroke, traumatic brain injuries, multiple sclerosis etc). It runs a highly innovative research program in the field and has links to many universities.

The Alpine Clinic is involved in the acute care and rehabilitation of patients with allergies, respiratory and lung diseases, as well as affections of the skin and eyes. There are special concepts for the treatment of in- and out patients including adults, youths and children and their parents. The clinic concentrates on patients from Germany as there are agreements with most German insurance companies.
